…4th of July Healthy Meals…

Wednesday, July 3, 2013

Yes summer time is here and what is the fun thing to do on holidays such as the 4th of July?
Meet at the park and have a BBQ with your friends and family?
Cook up some great foods and hit the lake?
Or go to the local pool or beach and enjoy the sun and some great food?
Just because it is a holiday does not mean that you have to make unhealthy food choices.
there are PLENTY of healthy food options for you to choose from.
You can create a healthy dish that looks just as good and TASTE just as YUMMY as the non healthy desserts you usually have.
Here are a few tips to help you stay on track with your healthy eating during the upcoming holiday weekend:
  • Try to make fruit trays instead of cookies or other types of candy
  • Use low-fat whip topping for a substitute for ice cream
  • You can make a low-fat pudding dessert and add fruit and granola instead of pies and ice cream
  • Try to provide water bottles instead of sugary drinks and carbonated beverages
  • If you want to get Popsicle try to use the fruit Popsicle or create your own with real fruit, honey, and almond milk
  • You can also freeze yogurt and server that as a sweet treat
  • Try to grill with chicken, turkey, or lean beef instead of other fatty meats
  • Try to keep the salads healthy by limiting the amount of cheese and creamy dressings that you can put on them.
  • PLAN AHEAD!  This will allow you to create and plan out your menu’s instead of waiting until the last-minute.  This will limit the chances of you “grabbing something” that can be unhealthy for you and your guest.
These are just a FEW tips that can help you stay on track with your healthy eating when you plan your 4th of July meals.

I hope that you guys have a fun, safe, and HEALTHY 4th of July!

(how do you guys like the new banner for Friday FITspiration !?!? :-) )

Do you see those great "100 Calorie" boxed foods
or the "100 Calories Snack Packs"
That they have at the store?

Yes they are great!! And they help you with controlling the portions that you eat
buuuuut...
the only downfall...
they are usually MORE expensive OR you can never find the snack packs in you favorite snack

Well...i have a great suggestion for you!
CREATE YOUR OWN SNACK PACKS!

All you have to do is:

(1)  get a bag of your favorite HEALTHY snack
(2)  get some of the small plastic sandwich bags (or Tupperware containers)
(3)  look on the BACK of your snack option and look at the nutritional information tag.  Find HOW MUCH one serving size is (like 22 chips/candies/etc)
(4)  put that many items in those plastic bags
(5)  store them in your cabinet or fridge
and thats it!

You have made your very own 100 Calorie or Snack Pack!

I honestly do this when I do get chips or other things that I have to monitor how much I have.
It makes it easy so you are not tempted to "eat just a few more"
And you save money by not having to buy the already separated packs at the store!

Hope this was a helpful FITspiration tip!
Check back next week for more tips and motivation!
Have a Happy Healthy Weekend!

Motivation
...it is the driving force to keep you going on those days you are tired....
...on those days you just do not feel like being in the gym...
....on those days you are not feeling good...
...or on any occasion you just try to search your mind for excuses so you DO NOT have to go to the gym...

My motto?
...When in doubt....Just go WORKOUT!...
Doing ANYTHING is better than not doing anything at all that day!
Even if you run a mile instead of  3 miles you usually run
or if you use the bike instead of the elliptical that day.
You are doing this for YOU!
So try to find things to help keep YOU motivated!
for once it is all about YOU!
So take advantage of it

Hump day is here again...
Have you ever wondered WHO came up with the phrase "Hump Day"...
...were they sitting in their kitchen drinking some coffee...reading the paper...and just decided..."Hmmm today is Wednesday.  I think i am going to call it Hump Day!"...LoL

Yea...i always have these kind of random questions floating around in my mind...
Oh Well! Happy Hump Day!! :-)

This is a pic of my fridge after i go shopping.  I use Sundays as my shop day and food prep day.
I cook ALL of my food for the week and it usually takes me about an hour and a half

I bake a package of chicken...cook a veggie mix...make some whole wheat pasta (or whole wheat rice depending on the week)...cut my fresh fruit...get my salad and the salad veggies cut...and i boil a dozen eggs (i got SO tired of eating scrambled eggs so i just eat the boiled eggs instead)

This is what i usually make but it differs from week to week.

After MANY attempts...i was finally able to paint my fingernails so they looked nice (and not like a 3 year old did them...LoL)  I never really painted my nails growing up. I was (and i still am) a tom boy...so i do it when i have time and i find a color i actually like

a new favorite snack/meal of mine... flour less protein pancakes!
They are SO yummy and they are light and i can make a batch and keep them around to snack on or have for breakfast if i wanted.

Look who go an IPad...for FREE!!
I start classes on the 13th and our school is trying an "Apple Initiative" program.
Our books, notes, lectures notes...everything class related will be digital this year.
and WE get to try it out to see how it goes.  I am very excited and i am still trying to figure out how to use the darn thing! Stupid apple products are like reading a foreign language for PC ppl!

as the school year is starting to approach consider donating school supplies to local schools and charities!
I know i have!

I am a BIG couponer and price matcher...so with the money i save on my groceries i will use it to buy school supplies to donate to local drives that are going on in my area. It is always nice to give back to a good cause!

Here is a pic of an average lunch for me. some baked chicken and a small salad with some veggies and water.  It was hard to get my portions right at first but i finally figured it out! and eating every few hours keeps me full so i do not get hungry at all during the day!

Had a GIRLS NIGHT with my sorority sister a few weeks ago! We went to happy hour at Drunken Fish which was a GREAT idea! Some great HEALTHY options for 1/2 the price!! Not to mention we saw The Dark Night after we ate...such a good movie...i think i am in love with Robin...LoL

hope you guys are having a good week!
Today is Wednesday so that means the weekend it right around the corner!
I know i am excited!! Going on another float trip!! Probably the last one for the year but we have a BIG group going and i got a new bikini! So excited :-)
Pictures to come soon!
